He has been surprised at the criticism his departure has prompted. "If I had known there would be this kind of public storm, I would not have left that [commission] meeting," Kerrey says.

In other words, "If the public didn't tell me what to do, I wouldn't know how to wipe myself." How can we let a man who doesn't have the cojones to give the slightest of offenses to a colleague, decide our national security agenda?
